Are We Failing Our Pastors?

A poverty of support - spiritual, social and financial - seems to be plaguing church ministers.

That's the observation from John Peachey (www.thethinkfarm.org) who cites low salary and poor resourcing as key reasons that pastors and service leaders are reporting strained mental health. The leadership mentor condemns the tendency of congregations to take their pastors for granted, saying it's "disgusting" to demand highly-skilled pastoral care while underpaying leaders, failing to provide for their retirement, and expecting their spouses to work for free.

So is the answer for smaller churches to collaborate with asset-rich denominations - which themselves may be staffed primarily by volunteers covering a myriad of tasks from kids ministry to building maintenance and cooking for their pastors?

At the least, John Peachey and Andrew Urquhart challenge Christians to care for their pastors.
