Discovering Truth Pt. 2

Pastor Jeff Vines opens his new series "Dirt Road Discipleship" by exploring John 18:37 and the question "What is truth?" He argues that truth is objective and can be established through legal-historical proof, much like historical events we accept without having witnessed them ourselves, pointing to fulfilled Old Testament prophecies, the empty tomb, and the transformative impact of the resurrection on the Greco-Roman world as compelling evidence for the reliability of Scripture and the reality of Jesus Christ.

He outlines tests historians use to verify ancient texts—authorial intent, internal consistency, lack of self-interest, inclusion of embarrassing details, and accuracy regarding people and places—showing how the Gospels pass each one. Vines concludes by applying this to discipleship, urging listeners to submit their feelings and culture to the objective truth of Scripture, pursue a relationship with Jesus grounded in truth rather than emotion, and make Christ the Lord and primary pursuit of their lives.
