Jesus' powerful paraable of the altruistic traveller from Samaria has entrenched the term 'Good Samaritan' in everyday language.  And now, it is on the way to being enshrined in New Zealand law.

Lt Col Ian Hutson told Andrew Urquhart that the Good Samaritan Bill as it is commonly known, aims to help save lives - in particular drug overdose deaths - by making it clear that those who assist others during emergencies or call for life-saving services will be protected from criminal prosecution.  With this legislation, it is hoped that the fear of retribution will no longer cost lives.
