Is New Chief the Hope for Balanced Journalism?
Should it matter that The Post's new Editor-in-Chief has bypassed journalism ranks and shot straight to the top job?
Former political strategist Matthew Hooton has built a long and illustrious career in the upper echelons of New Zealand's powerful institutions, serving a range stakeholders from political, corporate and community spheres; but the latest plot twist in his epic tale may have come as a surprise: his selection as Editor-in-Chief of The Post and Sunday Star Times, replacing Tracy Watkins.
Maxim Institute analyst Thomas Scrimgeour tells Andrew Urquhart that while Mr Hooton may not have worked as a journalist, his wealth of experience on the flipside of the equation could prove a welcome departure from the typically left-leaning worldview of legacy media.
