With a fifth of young Kiwis reporting high levels of psychological distress, youth mental health continues to be an area of great concern in New Zealand; and a mentorship programme may be just what the doctor ordered.

Founded 20 years ago, Upside Youth Mentoring is a lifeline for 9- to 13-year-olds who have been identified by their schools as needing a role model to help navigate their challenges. Upside Programme Manager Donald Fawkner believes 'presence' is key, and told Di Campbell how Upside's wide range of volunteer mentors are making a difference for some of New Zealand's at-risk youth.
