Derek Prince examines 1 John 2 and 1 John 4:2-3 to explain that Scripture reveals three forms of Antichrist: the many antichrists throughout history, the final singular Antichrist yet to come, and the underlying spirit of antichrist that works through them all. He outlines four marks of this spirit from John's letters: it arises from within the people of God yet does not truly belong (1 John 2:19); it denies that Jesus is the Messiah (1 John 2:22); it denies the Father-Son relationship within the Godhead; and it denies that Messiah has already come, often while still awaiting a future Messiah.

Applying these marks historically, Prince controversially argues that Judaism represents the first and most enduring manifestation of this spirit, having branched off from the true continuation of Old Testament faith found in Jesus and His disciples. He points to Matthew 27:21, where the crowd chose Barabbas over Jesus, as the first powerful historical outworking of the spirit of Antichrist, framing Barabbas as a type of Antichrist and warning believers that all humanity—and even the Church—may yet face a similar choice between Christ and a counterfeit saviour.
