Transformative dwellings that empower and enable residents is one organisation's answer to the housing crisis.

A community services strategist says although social housing has increased, the buildings are not suited to the needs of the communities they are meant to serve. Vision West's partnership manager Brook Turner points out that multi-storey units often don't factor in accessibility for elderly and disabled residents or large migrant and Pasifika families.

Conversely, Vision West's new "Village of Hope" development has been designed with community living in mind, not just housing density. And Mr Turner told Andrew Urquhart that this is only the beginning. (www.visionwest.org.nz)
