20261123 T&C IanMcinnes

Ian McInnes, CEO of Tearfund New Zealand has just returned from Nepal, where August's flash floods tore down Himalayan river valleys, wiping out homes, crops and livelihoods in an instant.

Ian reflects on meeting a 70-year-old grandmother now raising her grandchildren after her son was buried in a hydropower tunnel, and unpacks why Nepal holds such a special place in Kiwi hearts. He highlights how long-standing local partner Share and Care reached the hardest-hit communities first, argues that Nepal's small Christian minority has an outsized influence by serving people regardless of caste, and warns of the tough trade-off ahead as communities weigh rebuilding on the only flat land against facing the same risks again.
