Would We Notice If Our Freedom Slipped Away? | Thoughts on Politics EP3
Are we really a free country, and would we even notice if that freedom started to slip?
Andrew asks what freedom means in Aotearoa today. Freedom of speech, belief and conscience can feel like the water we swim in, so easy to take for granted that we forget the price already paid for them. What would it cost us to lose them, and are they still worth fighting for?
This is Episode 3 of Thoughts on Politics, a five-part series asking what’s broken in our country, whether we can fix it with politics, and who’s fit for the job as Election 2026 approaches.

Ian reflects on meeting a 70-year-old grandmother now raising her grandchildren after her son was buried in a hydropower tunnel, and unpacks why Nepal holds such a special place in Kiwi hearts. He highlights how long-standing local partner Share and Care reached the hardest-hit communities first, argues that Nepal's small Christian minority has an outsized influence by serving people regardless of caste, and warns of the tough trade-off ahead as communities weigh rebuilding on the only flat land against facing the same risks again. The full, unedited interview with Winston Peters, Leader of New Zealand First, recorded ahead of Election 2026.
This is the complete conversation, exactly as it was recorded. Nothing has been cut, trimmed or edited.
Winston Peters is in conversation with Andrew Curtis.
They discuss the current coalition and MMP, the role of government, New Zealand First's record in government, and the economy and inflation. They also cover coalition options after the election, welfare and personal responsibility, nationalism and immigration, puberty blockers, abortion, and New Zealand's involvement in international organisations.
As part of our Election 2026 coverage, we invited the leaders of the major NZ political parties, and the minor parties polling over 5%, to sit down for a conversation.
Every interview is published in full and each leader speaks for themselves.
We'd encourage you to hear from all of them before you vote.

Mr Cowen reflects on why grandparents often seem softer than the parents their children remember. He warns that it’s easy to forget the serious side of parenting, to the point where some grandparents aren’t trusted to take their grandchildren out. He argues that modern parents, with more knowledge and support than ever, are doing a fantastic job, and that the worst thing a grandparent can do is side with the grandchildren against their parents. Instead, he advocates for respect, asking before advising, and stepping into the role of coach, encourager and backup.
